Everyone knows my cartoon is far from truth. We all know Andrew, Olivia, and Jessica’s midterm projects are great, and we all love their works =) We all look foward to have cellular dinner on Thursday but we are going to miss Professor Hope so*100 badly at that night. The cartoon is just a joke. I hope no one minds my drawing….<3

Atomic size on a periodic table

  Generally the atomic size decreases across a period table from left to right and increases down a given group.

      Moving from left to right, the number of electrons and protons increase. Increase in the proton number creates stronger attractive force between protons and electrons, making electrons move closer to the positively charged nucleus. This results in the decrease in atom’s size.
      Moving down a group in the periodic table, the number of protons, electrons, and most importantly, the number of electron shells increase, while the number of valence electron stays the same. The outermost shell electrons are found farther from the nucleus. Accordingly, the influence of nucleus’s attractive force on outer shell electrons gets much weaker, allowing the electrons to disperse farther from the nucleus. Therefore, the atomic size increases.

class log- 2/25

Today’s class started off a bit slow, as everybody piled in we talked about everybody’s progress for our mid term crits, which are quickly approaching in a few weeks!

then once everyone had arrived we moved straight in to a our busy nights schedule of 5 presentation demos!

we started of with Hope’s demo on felt making, she started off by sharing with us the history of felt making. then we moved right to getting our hands dirty making H2O felt molecules. we all began by folding our dyed felts from Wild Yard, into little hydrogen and oxygen balls, then started getting wet and soapy, adding the alkaline and moisture needed to change our felt into it’s new H2O self. Everybody had there own approach to there molecules.

next we moved into my demo on starting your own business in Richmond, VA. i gave everybody a easy to understand step by step pamphlet about everything you need to know about getting you own business started in the city of Richmond. hopefully everybody will hang on to these and in the future you can review this sponge knowledge and hit the ground running if you want to start your own business!

after my presentation, we all circled around on the floor and Marylin demo! at this point everybody was ready to destress and have some fun. we got to try Chinese green tea, yogurt, milk shakes and Marylin had made cup cakes that everyone got to decorate with a spongy marshmallow icing, that we all had fun customizing.

everybody was now full on cupcakes and sugar as we moved on to John’s presentation on edible wild mushrooms. we got to look through field guides and sketches of all kinds of wild mushroom species.

john then began demonstrating how to prepare and cook all these wild mushrooms and we got to taste the delicious outcome. everybody was feeling really spongy and stuff started as we all circled around watching john cook, we all seem to be feeling more comfortable as colablablabalers and a group as a whole!

after feasting on fried mushrooms we move to Hyunji’s demo on GOSTOP the card game. we circled around a red blanket as she showed us what all the cards mentd. each picture on the cards illustrated a different season and certain card symbols were worth more points matched with their mates. then once we got the nack of how it worked everyone’s competitive side came out as we all gambled for chocolates!
